Naperville Wildlife Education: Is it against the law to kill a snake?

The idea that a snake could enter your home fills most of us with full-blown panic. Even though the majority of snakes are not venomous that doesn’t make the dread any less significant. Our first thought is typically to kill it. Few people know it is illegal to kill snakes in most states.

Consequences
Even though you might be petrified, the snake usually poses no threat to your life. Few people know enough about to snakes to know which ones are dangerous. They habitually seize the closest weapon, often a shovel, and chop the snake’s head off. Apart from being unnecessarily cruel, it could be an extremely expensive exercise.

When is it allowed?
There are circumstances where it is permissible to kill a snake. If you are in imminent danger then, you are allowed to eliminate the threat. They can also be killed if they are found on your property. In some states you will need a hunting license in order to kill one. The laws differ from state to state. There is a snake in Alabama that is on the endangered species list. This means that you will be prosecuted if you are convicted of killing one.

What are your options?
If you feel that you in imminent danger then you are allowed to kill the offending snake. This also means you might want to educate yourself on which snakes are found in your state. This will allow you to better familiarize yourself with the venomous ones.

Calling a professional
You might be comfortable killing a mouse when you discover it in your house but a snake is a different matter. You might want to leave this one to the professionals. If you live in an area where snakes are frequently found, it would be advisable to have the number of your closest animal removal company handy. This will allow you to contact them in the event of an unwelcome visitor.

How long will you have to wait?
Depending on where you live, the wildlife removal company should be able to reach you within a relatively short amount of time. You might want to cover the snake with a box or close it in a room to prevent it from roaming around unattended.

What to do in case of a snake bite
· Stay calm. It is urgent to keep calm in the event of a snake bite, even if it is a venomous snake.
· Identify the culprit. This will be very important once you get to the hospital.
· Get to a doctor immediately. It is crucial to administer antivenom as soon as they can.
· Remove all jewelry and keep the area below your heart.
· Don’t do any sort of strenuous activity that will elevate your heart rate.
· Do not ingest any substance that could thin your blood, i.e. alcohol.
· Do not try to apply a cold compress to the area.
· Do not try to cut out or suck out the venom.
